Happy first birthday to We Get It!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has”. – Margaret Mead

Wow, it has been a bloody good year for We Get It! We launched on 27th September 2018. A year later, we’ve got our weekly Get-Together up and running, a new monthly pub night hosted by our wonderful patron, Bob Crampton, a long list of successful events and workshops behind us, plus our own stand at Bath’s Royal United Hospital, Well-being day.

We have the best team ever and we are all volunteers with our own story of why we want to support We Get It. Our team consists of Sarah Baker (Social Media & Events Director), Robin Worrall (Design & Brand Consultant), Sue Judge (Wellness & Get-Together Lead), Lizzie Heffer (Director of Marketing & Business Development), Bob Crampton (WGI Patron & Press Officerr), Lara Kavanagh (Copywriter & Content Editor) Dee Gerrish (Business Consultant & Company Secretary) and Jo Bridger (Treasurer & Finance Director). Check out what We Get It has achieved this year and see how we’ve helped, engaged and supported more people dealing with cancer in Bath.

We started the year with a big launch event at Walcot House with Deborah James (@BowelBabe) in November 2018. The room was full, goodie bags went down a treat and everyone had a drink in hand. The audience was engaged, asked lots of questions and took the opportunity to meet and chat afterwards. We smashed it – what a night!

Then in January 2019, we started the Get-Together, a weekly meetup every Friday morning at Cafe Walcot. If you need us, we’re here – any cancer, any gender and any age. No one else does this locally and that’s why we’re different. Come and join us!

Our first workshop in February with Diane Lee at Bath Yoga Studio enabled other cancer patients to connect with each other in a safe space. When you have no hair or are feeling a bit vulnerable after treatment, the last place you want to be is in a gym. This course was great for people who were mid treatment or recently finished.

For our next panel event on 23rd May, Sarah Baker managed to organise another inspirational panelist, Steve Bland. Here, we covered a slightly different topic – life after the death of a partner. Again, we had an amazing, engaged audience, full of questions and contributions about how we can better support people dealing with cancer, as well as their families and support networks. We were also lucky to have representatives from several local charities in the room.

Our summer fermentation workshop on gut health was delivered by the amazing Sue Judge and Lucie from Bath Culture House. Thank you to Castle Farm for hosting and Riverford for gifting us vegetables.

Then in October we hosted the first in our new event series all about cancer and relationships: Never mind the cancer, what about the sex? This was a fantastic night with guests Emma Campbell and husband Sober Dave, where we opened up a refreshingly frank conversation about cancer and sex. If you missed it, you really did miss out – catch up in our short film and do keep an eye on our Events page for the next one.

This year has been pretty great because we have empowered, supported and grown our Bath cancer community. Thank you to everyone who has attended our panel events, taken part in a workshop, grabbed a coffee with us on a Friday, gifted us products or services for free and liked our posts. We want to put on more workshops, events and meetups next year to help more people dealing with cancer in Bath. Help us grow our community – join the movement today. You can sign up for our newsletters at the bottom of the homepage.

Watch out 2020 – we have a plan and it’s looking good! Thank you We Get It team for making all of this possible.
