Conversations that matter: We Get It’s cancer and sex event

What a night! We said we were ready to talk about sex and cancer, and that’s exactly what we did. On the 10th October, we launched the first in our new event series all about cancer and relationships: Never mind the cancer, what about the sex?

Helping us kick it all off were the wonderful Emma Campbell (author of All That Followed: a story of cancer, kids and the fear of leaving too soon) and husband Sober Dave, who joined us for a frank and open discussion.

Managing romance, love, dating and sex, while also dealing with cancer, is a subject that isn’t really talked about openly. Until now, that is. We spent the evening discussing the feelings that go with trying (or not trying) to pick up your sex life during or after cancer treatment.

We touched on the fallout from surgery and medication, and how scar tissue and intimate treatments had long-lasting effects on our sex lives and therefore on our relationships. Audience members shared nervous dating stories, tales of relationships that were under pressure because of cancer and how others had felt trying to support their partners with little help. The evening was sensitive, poignant and powerful, addressing a subject that has so far been ignored.

This was our first event headlined by a couple and we’re so grateful to have had Emma and Dave in the room to start the conversation, hosted by We Get It’s Lizzie Heffer.

If you couldn’t make it on the night, get a little taster of the conversation in our short film.

Now for the thank yous…

Huge thanks to Emma and Dave for sharing their relationship highs and lows with us. You had us gripped and we really appreciated your honesty (without a hint of sugar coating) and clear love for each other.

Thank you Lizzie for your extraordinary sensitivity in getting the very best from our guests.

Thanks to everyone at Cafe Walcot for your support and to Apex Hotels for gifting a room for Emma and Dave.

Big shout out to Ubiety and Yes Organics for sharing generously with our audience and to Roy Newport for the fab photos capturing the essence of the evening.

Thanks to Toppings Bath for sourcing Emma’s brilliant book (signed copies available in store).

And lastly, high fives to our wonderful We Get It team for working so hard to make our events happen. We can’t wait for the next one. Keep an eye on our events page and on your inbox.
